The CAS Registry BLAST® software has been enhanced with exciting new functionality:

28 July 2002:

  1. Sequence Assistant for searching biosequences in DGENE : This extension of the existing Sequence Assistant offers menu driven use of the BLAST, GETSIM and GETSEQ modules for searching protein and nucleotide sequences in DGENE. All options and parameters which were available already in the command mode via "RUN Packages" are now available in the menu and options screens. The assistant and its functionality is fully integrated into the existing STN on the Web environment.
  2. Changeable Transcript Names: STN on the Web transcripts can be downloaded via the Transcript Assistant. With the new feature the default file names may be changed to customer needs. All linked images will be renamed accordingly.
  3. IPAA for STN on the Web: With this release, IPAA is also available for STN on the Web. The STN SAT (Site Administration Tool) can be used to establish and administrate IP access for end-users.
  4. More Hyperlinks:
    • WPINDEX, WPIDS, WPIX
These files contain bibliographic and substance records. The new hyperlinks (in the DCSE, KW fields) enable crossover linking between the two types of records.
    • INPADOCDB
The new link (in the OSDW field) offers crossover linking to corresponding WPI records.
    • DETHERM
This file contains bibliographic and table/numeric records. The new link (in the field RACC) will automatically retrieve corresponding table

03 December 2000:

  1. Alert (SDI) Assistant: This new tool leads the user, step-by-step, through the set-up of a customized, automatic current-awareness Alert (SDI) in a single file.  The Assistant offers a concise overview of all the various optional SDI functions.  The Alert (SDI) Assistant is available from the Search Assistants folder in the left-hand toolbar during an online session.
  2. Citation Searching:   The new Citing References button allows the user to find documents that cite the retrieved reference. The system checks to see if the document has been cited by other documents in  CAPLUS and SCISEARCH and retrieves the citing records from these two databases. The Citing References button can be found in records from more than 40 STN databases including: AEROSPACE, AGRICOLA, ANABSTR, BIOSIS, BIOTECHNO, CABA, CAPLUS, COMPENDEX, EMBASE, ENERGY, FROSTI, FSTA, INSPEC, MEDLINE, METADEX, RAPRA, and SCISEARCH.
  3. Transcript Enhancements:
    • Full-text links stay active in downloaded transcripts
    • Ability to select from available transcript format options (rtf, pdf, html) at logoff
    • All transcripts of the last 4 days available at logoff
    • Session in one transcript: when there is a Logoff Hold or a lost session, the transcript of the resumed session is appended to the previous transcript.
  4. Session output control feature added: "Hide session output" and "Show session output" links in the right hand corner of the bottom frame of the session page toggle the session output shown in the session window on and off. This does not affect what is being recorded in the session transcript. The transcript is controlled by the Transcript Assistant.
  5. Special Character Translation: Where possible, special characters, such as Greek beta, are converted to expected representations, such as a Greek symbol, in displays and transcripts.
  6. Related Records linked in Derwent Databases: Records that are related in Derwent databases now have hypertext links for Derwent World Patents Index accession numbers. The feature links patent records in BIOTECHABS, BIOTECHDS, CROPU, DGENE, DPCI, DJSMONLINE, WPINDEX, WPIDS, and WPIX.  For example, the link for the accession number in WPINDEX, WPIDS, and WPIX records allows the user to easily retrieve records on the same patent in other Derwent databases.
  7. Upload Feature for Biosequence Queries: Upload of long bio-sequences for use in the RUN GETSEQ and GETSIM packages in DGENE is now available. The new "Upload Sequence" link is available in the left-hand navigation bar in the Search Assistants folder.   The interface leads the user through the upload procedure. After selecting the local ASCII file containing the biosequence, a click of the Upload button automatically starts the Kermit transfer protocol performing the upload.
  8. Enhanced Structure Plugin: The new version of the Structure Plugin now allows generation of DWPI structures. The Functional Group Search option and the Refine option are now available. With these enhancements, the Web structure plugin now offers the same functionality as STN Express.

16 April 2000:
  1. Search Preview: This new tool supports less experienced searchers in conducting a preview search in the STN Index environment, followed by retrieving relevant documents from the desired databases. The navigation frame has been modified to reflect this new tool.
  2. Patent Search: This new tool offers convenient "point & click" searching and retrieval for patent information based on patent, application, and priority numbers using the full power of STNīs patent databases. In addition, all patent numbers, application numbers, and priority numbers in patent file displays are hyperlinked to initiate the Patent Search tool. Hyperlinked patent numbers also may be used to initiate the STN Full-text Solution. The navigation frame has been modified to reflect this new tool.
  3. Enhanced Transcript Assistant: Self-executing zipped RTF/GIF and HTML/GIF transcript options are offered for Windows and UNIX.
  4. Japanese Structure Plug-in: A Japanese version of the structure query plug-in for Windows is available.
  5. Macintosh Structure Plug-in: A structure query plug-in for Macintosh is now available.
  6. Browser Behavior: Improved browser responses to various situations have been installed, including a smooth reconnect to a session after being disconnected.
  7. Product Information: Convenient pre-login hyperlinks are now available to a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page and to the product news page.
  8. Browser Support: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 is a supported browser.

20 September 1999:

  1. Free Search Preview: STN offers access to more than 200 databases in science and technology, representing more than a billion individual records abstracted and indexed by professional staff. STNindex is a powerful tool used to quickly scan multiple databases and identify those that have records matching the query search terms. Search Preview allows a limited use of this powerful scanning tool to visually demonstrate the wealth of information that is available on STN. Click on the "Free Search Preview" button from the Login Screen to try it out.
  2. New Transcript Format: The versatile Rich Text Format (RTF) is available for downloading session transcripts and exporting them into a wide variety and versions of popular word processing packages. The zipped RTF/GIF format includes all images displayed during the session. The direct RTF format does not include images, is a larger file taking longer to download, and does not require use of a ZIP program.
  3. Upload Command File: Professional searchers can create complex search strategies off line, and then upload these command (script) files to an STN on the Web session for efficient execution, thereby minimizing connect time charges for typing in and correcting commands. Command scripts can be submitted one line at a time or all at once. A script command line may be edited before it is submitted.
